Materials collected by Katherine Gue Leonard, 1842-1875.

The collection contains a variety of materials acquired by Katherine Gue Leonard. The collection includes the Civil War diary of Levi L. Hoag, who served as the color bearer in Company C, 24th Iowa Infantry (1862-1865). It also contains a handwritten draft of a speech by Ulysses S. Grant, which may have been written at Benjamin Gue's desk. Also in the collection are miscellaneous items including a telegram to Benjamin Gue (1850), a military land warrant (1853), an 1853 note posted on a schoolhouse door in Sugar Creek Township (Cedar County, Iowa), a printed copy of proceedings with Daniel Ellyson, deputy State Auditor in the Iowa House of Representatives (1864), and an ad for the sale of town lots in Boone, Iowa (1865).

Katherine Gue Leonard was a daughter of Benjamin Gue, who was a Republican legislator and served as the Lieutenant Governor of Iowa (1866-1868). In 1901, she married Arthur Gray Leonard, who became the State Geologist of North Dakota and a noted geology professor.
